In contrast to other blood-brain barrier (BBB) models, the DIV-BBB reflects the anatomical aspects of in situ endothelial cell-astrocyte interactions. The DIV-BBB allows the formation of tight junctions that can be easily visualized using an electron microscope or experimentally verified with tracers. Moreover, the exposure to shear stress crucially modulates cell differentiation in vivo, and the DIV-BBB appropriately recapitulates this phenomenon in vitro.
